System partner OSRAM supports BMW i8 laser lights

August 7, 2014 - Munich - The BMW i8 is the world's first mass-produced model to use laser lights. In the development process of laser light sources, Osram played a decisive role. Laser lights are regarded as the next development direction of automotive lighting. In addition to their own functional advantages, laser lights also bring new design possibilities. "As an integrated system supplier, we combine our laser technology with the automotive lighting sector, highlighting our leading position in the entire automotive lighting technology field." said Hans-Joachim Schwabe, CEO of Osram's Special Lighting Division. With the advent of the BMW i8 model, Munich automaker BMW is expected to launch a car equipped with laser lights in the second half of 2014.
In the development of laser lamps, Osram combined its many years of experience in semiconductor technology with its strong strengths as a system supplier. Among them, the laser diode is manufactured by Osram Opto Semiconductors Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Osram, and the laser module is designed based on the proprietary technology of the Special Lighting Department.
Laser lights are a new stage in the future development of automotive lighting. The laser module installed in the BMW i8 car illuminates the road at a far greater distance than many previous solutions, and this laser module was jointly developed by BMW and Osram. However, there is still a long way to go before laser lights become as common as halogen or xenon lights. On the road to achieving this goal, BMW has already taken a decisive first step.
LED light sources have provided a new way to visually distinguish motor vehicles. Unique headlight designs not only help people distinguish different motor vehicles, but can also significantly improve brand recognition. Laser technology further drives this trend forward. The high brightness of laser lights far exceeds the brightness of any existing light source. Therefore, headlights equipped with laser light sources can be designed to be smaller than ever before. At the same time, the high beam based on the laser module can provide the maximum light range, which will greatly improve the driver's visibility at night. Compared with LED light sources, integrating the design and functions of laser lights into automotive lighting will bring huge potential to the future development of laser lights.
